Creative storage part 2 The Bathroom
Last Wednesday for Works for me Wednesday I posted about using the space behind your doors to store things. I mentioned I keep the extra rolls of paper towels and toilet paper behind the door in our bathroom.
Today while bathing my daughter I realized I have a lot of storage in my bathroom that might be helpful to others.
When we first moved here we had the choice between this apartment and the other downstairs apartment. It really was a hard decision. The other apartment had a pantry, but a pedestal sink in the bathroom. The biggest reason we chose this one was because the bathroom was off the master bedroom not the 2nd bedroom. I just didn’t think walking through my daughters room during the night or nap time to go to the bathroom was a wise idea.
I wish we had a pantry, but I am GLAD we have the extra storage in the bathroom. Not only do we have that sink, but we have a 4 drawer plastic cart on wheels and a metal shelf.
The metal shelf holds our towels and wash cloths, since it sits right next to the shower it’s easy to grab a wash cloth if you forgot it.
The plastic cart has first aid stuff, all the hair stuff I have, extra toothbrushes and tooth paste and razors, travel sized bottles of things and the bottom drawer is our filing cabinet. I realize not everyone has this much floor space in their bathroom, so you might find the next few items even more helpful. (ignore the mess on the cart, I didn’t clean it up for you.)
Under the sink holds cleaners, mouthwash and a bunch of extra shampoo and conditioner and body wash. As well as hair products and face wash and a few other things.
Going even further into our bathroom storage is this great over the curtain rod holder with mesh pockets. We keep things like shaving cream, baby wash, body wash and shampoo in it. The best part about this mesh thing is I got it at Biglots for about $4. It has plenty of space for a big family- assuming they don’t keep as much stuff in the shower as I do.
We also have this metal container that suction cups to the wall, as you can see it holds shampoo and conditioner, as well as my body puff. We also have a matching dish like this for the bar soap, and my razor hangs on the wall with a suction cup hook. I like having all these hanging things in the shower because it eliminates shampoo bottles and body wash sitting around the edge of the tub.
I’m amazed at how much stuff ends up in our bathroom, but really we have so much stuff that every room in our apartment is like this. That’s why it’s important to be creative with storage.
Now if anyone has any ideas to store the toys that end up in the bathroom for bath time, I’d love to hear them. We had a turtle thing that suction cupped to the wall and had two small mesh pockets to hold the toys, but it got nasty, and when I washed it the suction cups fell off, and it took up so much wall space I just didn’t like it. So any ideas are welcomed!

For your bath toy storage problem, I would suggest the tip I posted for Works For Me Wednesday back on Sept. 19, 2007. Here’s the link:

I see you use some of the same storage ideas I use.
I love those plastic drawers and I also use decorative baskets.

Kacie, I used to keep my underwear in one of those drawers, and my pants in the bottom drawer. Eventually I got sick of being able to see my underwear so I moved it back into one drawer of my husband’s dresser. Then I realize how silly it was of me to keep my pants in that bottom drawer, because it has the tabs to hang file folders in it, and I had all my files in a drawer in my desk- which didn’t work well. Since my desk is in my bedroom, I just switched the contents of the drawers and it works perfectly!

I had one of my bath scrunchy washy things fall apart once. It was pretty long, all opened up. I could throw in some bath toys, and tie it around our little over-the-shower-head shelf in a bow, so everything could drip dry.

Great storage solutions; thanks for the great ideas! For bath toys, I think they’re plain nasty. Until they make a rubber ducky Without A Hole that sucks up icky bathwater I’ll continue to only let my kiddos play with cups in the tub. I take home the cups they get from restaurants and they happily fill and dump them on each other during bathtime. I just empty them and store them upside down (not stacked so they’ll dry thoroughly) on a corner shelf stuck high on the shower wall. I toss the old cups every couple of weeks when I wash the tub. They’re not cute but they’re (somewhat) more sanitary!

I have drawers like that in my bathroom, too! I have extra counter space and no floor space, so I got the largest size of surface drawers. (I’ll have to take a picture sometime so you know what I mean.) I keep medicine and beauty supplies (hair things, barrettes, bobby pins, etc.) in it. I have drawers similar to yours in the bedroom, which I use for socks, slips, etc. Hmm I must have a lot of socks to fill that whole thing full! I should go through it and weed out the socks I don’t wear anymore.

That looks great! You’ve got it well organized in there.
I have a similar plastic storage thing that I use to keep my socks and underwear organized. Because it sits in plain view, I decided to put some paper on the inside of the drawers to make it not see-through—I just didn’t want people to see my underwear, ya know?
I think my drawers (double meaning!) are better for it.
